Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card)

How Do I Get a White Card in Melbourne?

How Do I Get a White Card in Melbourne?

The Australian White card is an invaluable tool for working in the construction industry. Under Australian law, you will not be permitted to work in construction without it. So, how do you obtain one of these cards?

Well, you cannot get a Victorian white card through an online course. The law doesn't allow for people to obtain their card that way, as it is only available through a physical classroom course. That means someone has to be present to teach you the requirements for the course before you can obtain the card.

A White Card Melbourne course has no online component. However, other states, such as Western Australia, will allow people to take the course online rather than in a physical classroom.

Who Provides the Card?

WorkSafe Victoria will issue the Victorian White Card, and this card has no expiry date and will always be valid. You will not have to re-take the course later on. That helps the card retain its value and ensures that this course doesn't have to become a recurring cost for workers or employers.

The card is only provided after completion of the course, and the card can be used for work in painting, carpentry, civil construction, plastering, refurbishment, repairs, plumbing, electrical and more.

This card was previously known as the Victorian Red Card or Victorian CI Card. The class is known as the White Card Class.

What the Course Entails

The course includes training and a written assessment. All questions on the assessment are multiple choice. The course teaches safe working practices- how to keep a safe worksite, prevent injury and protect coworkers. It also teaches participants how to respond in the event of an emergency or accident- i.e. any OHS incident.

The participants are taught what their roles and responsibilities are once they obtain their card. They are told what to expect and what is expected from them as a White Card holder.

They are also taught how to read and interpret safety information. They will be trained how to apply that information to their workplace, including new information pertaining to machinery, tools and new workplace hazards.

All participants are trained in how to identify hazards in the workplace, how to prevent workplace injury and how to deal with hazards when they are spotted. All of these safe working practices are designed to keep a clean, secure workplace that has few hazards.

This card is nationally recognized, and in some cases is internationally recognized. The White Card is a requirement for anyone hoping to start work in the construction industry and related fields, as it prepares the course participant for a workplace environment.
